I had an interesting time making this particular vessel. Once the spines were done, I tried several different types of weaving media and each one was wrong. I finally chose these natural fibers, yarns and fabrics and the vessel was on its way. Weaving one to four strands at a time, I was able to create this wonderfully tactile, fuzzy basket. Then the challenge became what to put inside of it. What was the story? A swing? A person? After many frustrating tries, I ended up picking a rock that was hanging out in my studio and laying it in the bottom of the vessel. Then the forest floor appeared.
I am often more comfortable sitting on a rock in the forest than I am anywhere else. So sometimes I peer inside this basket, imagine myself sitting on the rock looking at the fuzzy walls and think…HOME.
