PHOTOGRAPHY 2010-2020
July 21, 2018Photography is therapeutic for me. Getting behind a camera and exploring the intricacies of the world, especially at the macro level, expands my soul. It incorporates all of my favorite things: story-telling, color, texture, play, and drama. Most of my work is done in the studio (with the exception of Impermanence) using whatever little pieces of material I find.
RUST: IMPERMANENCE
This series was an ongoing passion. I would go to junkyards searching for cool rust. In my mind, rust does not stop, it is always changing. Living in a society which glorifies the new and shiny, it felt like therapy to hang out with old cars. I also made rust in the studio (with vinegar and steel) and experimented with ways of painting with it before taking photos.
YARN
It was easy to start taking photos of yarn, I happen to have a ton of it in the studio. And I wanted to practice different lighting techniques. I love the movement of the yarn, even when it’s sitting still, it has a natural movement to it.
STORYTELLING WITH YARN
In this series, the yarn became figures, personalities and people from throughout my life.
POLYMER CLAY ABSTRACT
Another material which I had plenty of was polymer clay. So I began playing with different lighting aspects to see what came out. I was surprised that a material which is basically plastic could be so sensual and rich in color.
POLYMER CLAY STORYTELLING
Eventually the polymer clay led to storytelling as well.
