Baskets are an amazing art and craft form. I used to make really cool baskets when I was working with clay. I rolled yards and yards of polymer clay ropes and wove them around spines made of polymer clay and wire. When I started welding large structures, I left behind a love of weaving, one which I didn’t realize I missed until recently.

This is the first of what I hope will be many baskets using all the different media that I love working with. The spines are welded and painted steel, granting me the permanence and stability I never could achieve with polymer clay. The use of yarns and paint allow me to transform the steel and create a more organic effect.

I also really love tree houses, I didn’t have one when I was growing up, although I spent quite a bit of time up in the red maple by the road. I once had a neighbor who promised to build a tree house in his backyard…as soon as I put a pool in mine. Needless to say, neither project happened, so I will dedicate this sculpture to Albin. Maybe he will get the hint.
